Measure representative pages under repeatable conditions; buy more hosting only when evidence connects the bottleneck to the hosting or capacity requirement.

Find which part of the page is slow before buying a larger hosting plan. A late first response, a large hero image and a page blocked by scripts are different problems. A faster server can help some workloads; it cannot make every unnecessary download or slow third-party script disappear.
Start with a small measurement sheet and a recoverable test environment. This guide offers a diagnosis process based on primary documentation. It contains no speed test of the hosting companies in our comparisons.
1. Describe the symptom precisely
Is the whole site slow, one landing page slow, or only the WordPress dashboard? Did it begin after a plugin update, new design, traffic increase or hosting change? Note the time and the first known change. A screenshot saying “slow” gives support less to investigate than a particular URL, action and repeatable delay.
Choose representative pages: for example, the homepage, a normal article and the business-critical form or store page. Compare logged-out visitor behavior separately from logged-in administration. A cached public article does not represent an uncached cart or an editor saving a draft.
A diagnostic workbook, not a universal speed score
| Observed pattern | Investigate next | Avoid concluding |
|---|---|---|
| Long wait before the document responds | Redirects, network distance, cache state and backend work | That the hosting company alone caused the delay |
| Text arrives but the main image appears late | Image size, discovery, priority and rendering | That more server storage will fix it |
| Page looks ready but controls respond late | Main-thread work, scripts and embedded tools | That a good screenshot proves a good experience |
| Only uncached or logged-in actions struggle | Application queries, extensions and resource limits | That a cached homepage test represents every task |
| Performance changed after one release | A controlled comparison with the previous working setup | That an unrelated upgrade is the first repair |
2. Collect a useful baseline
For a public URL, PageSpeed Insights separates real-user field data from a simulated lab run. Record which one you are reading, the URL or origin scope, and the test conditions. A new or low-traffic page may have insufficient field data; that absence is not a pass or failure.
Repeat a small number of comparable lab runs rather than selecting the best-looking result. Keep device mode, page and cache assumptions consistent. Record the pattern and notable variation. A single change in the performance score does not establish a reliable improvement, and a perfect score is not a revenue or Google-ranking guarantee.
The Chrome Network panel can show which requests wait or transfer for longest. Its cache controls help distinguish a repeat visit from a browser-cache-disabled test. Do not confuse that browser setting with bypassing every server or CDN cache.
3. Address the page work you can explain
Inspect the main image and other large assets. Is an oversized original being sent to a small screen? Does a decorative video or embed delay useful content? Improve the most consequential resource first, then recheck the same page.
Google’s LCP guidance separates waiting for the first response, discovering the main resource, downloading it and rendering it. This distinction matters: compressing an image may help transfer time while leaving late discovery untouched. Removing a useful feature purely to improve a number is not necessarily a better customer experience.
Review third-party widgets and scripts against their actual purpose. Keep a required payment or accessibility workflow working; remove unused additions in a test environment. Record the change so a broken interaction can be traced back.
4. Check caching and application behavior
The WordPress performance handbook explains different caching layers and the extra care required by dynamic content. Confirm what the host already supplies before installing another cache plugin. Multiple overlapping controls can make invalidation and diagnosis harder.
Protect carts, account pages and personalized responses from inappropriate caching. Ask the host or application documentation which exclusions apply. If an edit disappears after a purge, use the stale-content diagnostic rather than repeatedly clearing everything.
For a suspected plugin or theme regression, reproduce it on a separate copy. Change one component at a time and verify the business workflow as well as speed. Our staging checklist helps structure that comparison.
5. Ask for evidence about the server
Time to First Byte guidance describes contributions from redirects, network conditions and application work. A fast cached response can hide a slow origin. Ask the host about the affected request, resource-limit events and available application diagnostics before treating every long wait as insufficient hardware.
Give support the exact time, URL, logged-in state and steps needed to reproduce the issue. Remove personal data, authorization headers and cookies from shared diagnostic exports. Do not publish full request logs or database contents to obtain a quick answer.
When an upgrade becomes reasonable
Upgrade when the observed workload exceeds documented capacity, needed operational tools are missing, or a controlled representative test supports the move. Ask what changes with the proposed tier: resources, caching, support responsibility and the initial and renewal bill. A bigger label alone is not evidence.
Use shared versus managed WordPress hosting and the hosting inclusion checklist to compare the responsibility you are buying. Keep the baseline and remeasure after the change. If the same bottleneck remains, investigate it instead of moving through progressively more expensive plans.

How to read these prices
Compare the job, the full initial commitment and the renewal billing basis. Each company appears once. Open Change plan to view every recorded plan and term. Showing a plan does not change your two-plan comparison. The initial view uses a recorded non-trial option where available; it is not a ranking. Feature marks are tied to the documented plan, market, limits and billing conditions. Their check dates are independent from price rechecks. Europe is not one price or tax jurisdiction; select your actual billing country at checkout. These are researched public offers, not checkout quotes or hands-on tests. Currency values are not conversions. Listing order does not depend on commission.
