Move only the services you intend to replace, test a matching file-and-database copy and define final synchronization and recovery before changing DNS.

Move WordPress with a tested copy of its database and files, keep email and DNS accounted for, and decide how to handle changes made during the move. A hosting migration does not automatically transfer a domain registration or mailbox history. Keep the old service until the replacement works and you can explain how to recover.
This guide covers a self-hosted WordPress site you administer with permission, usually keeping the same domain. A multisite network, large store or simultaneous domain change needs a more specific migration plan. The checklist below is an editorial planning tool, not a migration we performed.
1. Decide exactly what is moving
Write down the current registrar, authoritative DNS provider, website host and email supplier. They may be four companies or one bundle. Ask which services end when the old hosting is cancelled. An inbox located on that server needs its own migration even if the website moves successfully.
The WordPress migration handbook distinguishes keeping the existing URLs from changing them. For a host-only move, avoid introducing a new domain at the same time unless there is a clear requirement. Fewer simultaneous changes make a failure easier to identify.
Your migration acceptance sheet
| Item | Record | Ready when |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership and access | Owner, old host, new host, registrar and DNS access | An authorized person can recover each account |
| Website copy | Backup time, database and matching files | A separate restoration opens and important pages work |
| Business changes | Orders, bookings, forms, memberships and edits | Final synchronization and reconciliation have an owner |
| Email and DNS | Nameservers, full zone, mailbox location and sending services | The website move will not silently remove mail dependencies |
| Recovery | Previous configuration, stop conditions and decision maker | The team knows when to stop and how new activity is preserved |
2. Make a complete, private backup
Follow the host’s or migration tool’s documented process to capture a matching database and file set. WordPress backup guidance treats them as separate parts. Keep a protected copy you can access if the old hosting account becomes unavailable.
Inventory uploads, themes, plugins and necessary configuration using the WordPress file-backup checklist. Configuration can contain credentials; the database can contain customer and user information. Do not share either in a public support request or leave an archive in a publicly downloadable website directory.
A download from Tools → Export can help transfer editorial content, but is not a complete site backup. It does not replace the operational inventory. Read how to make a backup you can restore before trusting a successful download notification.
3. Prepare and test the destination
Check the destination supports the site’s requirements, including the PHP version, extensions, storage, scheduled tasks and required plugins. Ask the new host how to test a same-domain copy before switching visitors. A temporary preview address may behave differently from the final HTTPS domain.
Restrict access to the test copy. Prevent it from sending real customer emails, accepting real payments or running duplicate external jobs. Search-engine exclusion is useful, but noindex is not access control. A staging copy containing personal information needs appropriate protection.
Work through representative pages, media, navigation, search, forms, logins and any store workflow in a suitable test mode. Verify internal links and HTTPS behavior. If URLs change, use a supported migration process that understands WordPress data; an indiscriminate text replacement can damage serialized settings. WordPress’s WP-CLI documentation describes handling PHP serialized data; an administrator must still verify scope and recovery before changing a database. Do not copy database-editing commands without understanding their scope.
4. Plan the last copy and DNS change
A copy made on Monday will not contain Tuesday’s new order. For an active site, agree a brief controlled editing or transaction window, or use a documented synchronization method appropriate to that application. Identify where authoritative new orders and submissions will be recorded. Do not assume two independently writable copies will merge themselves.
Preserve the full DNS zone before changing delegation. Namecheap documents that records are not automatically carried between its DNS arrangements. Prefer the exact website-record change the destination requires when keeping the existing DNS service is supported. Review mail, verification and DNSSEC dependencies separately.
Use the domain connection checklist to protect email. Cached DNS can cause visitors to reach different servers during the transition; no fixed waiting period proves that everyone has switched.
5. Verify, reconcile and then retire the old host
- Check the intended site at the final domain, including HTTPS and important redirects.
- Confirm recent content, uploads and business records reached the destination.
- Test incoming mail, outgoing mail and website-form delivery separately.
- Check scheduled jobs and integrations are active once, in the intended environment.
- Record errors and reconcile activity created around the switch before cancelling anything.
If a serious problem appears, stop changes and assess the last trustworthy state. Redirecting visitors back to an older database may lose legitimate new records. Recovery should include reconciliation, not just reversing DNS.
What should you pay for?
Consider a managed migration when it covers your actual site size, access restrictions and operational needs. Confirm scope, exclusions, timing, recovery and whether mail is included in writing. An advertised free migration is not proof that a store’s live orders or a hosting mailbox are covered.
Compare the full hosting commitment and renewal before switching for a discount. If the reason is speed, first use the performance diagnosis. The useful purchase solves a documented problem and leaves someone responsible for the move.

How to read these prices
Compare the job, the full initial commitment and the renewal billing basis. Each company appears once. Open Change plan to view every recorded plan and term. Showing a plan does not change your two-plan comparison. The initial view uses a recorded non-trial option where available; it is not a ranking. Feature marks are tied to the documented plan, market, limits and billing conditions. Their check dates are independent from price rechecks. Europe is not one price or tax jurisdiction; select your actual billing country at checkout. These are researched public offers, not checkout quotes or hands-on tests. Currency values are not conversions. Listing order does not depend on commission.

Limits: A copied web directory does not normally contain a hosted MySQL database or external services. - WordPress: content exportChecked WXR export transfers editorial content and related records.
Limits: Tools Export is not a complete hosting, plugin, configuration, mailbox or DNS backup. - Namecheap: changing DNSChecked Changing nameservers can require manually recreating the active DNS records.
