Wordfence offers a WordPress security plugin and separate service levels. Free includes useful controls; Premium changes threat-update timing and adds features/support. Care and Response describe hands-on services. Choose the work you need performed rather than assuming every paid tier provides the same operating responsibility.
This is a researched guide to official documentation checked on 6 October 2026. We have not measured protection, scanning accuracy, performance or support response, and no Wordfence service was purchased or activated for this guide.
Understand the product and service distinction
| Decision | Check before buying | Reason to skip an upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Actual sites, users, storage or audience in the selected plan | The extra capacity has no defined use |
| Commitment | Full upfront amount, renewal period and temporary extras | The commitment exceeds the available budget |
| Operation | Who will manage updates, access, recovery and the required workflow | A purchase leaves essential work without an owner |
The amounts and service descriptions come from Wordfence’s pricing page. Verify licence coverage, eligibility, service exclusions and renewal at checkout. The table does not rate effectiveness or establish a guaranteed result on your installation.
Free is a real option to evaluate
Wordfence Free documentation describes an endpoint firewall, scanner, alerts and login controls including two-factor authentication. Its 30-day delay applies to newly released rules and signatures; it does not mean the Free version has no firewall.
An original example: the owner of a simple publication can update its software promptly, check alerts and maintain a working restore procedure. That owner can evaluate Free’s features against the actual requirements before paying. If there is no operator to maintain those tasks, purchasing a software licence alone does not supply one.
What Premium changes
The Premium guide describes real-time firewall rules and scan signatures, an additional IP blocklist, country blocking and ticket-based support. Newer threat data changes timing, but does not prove that every possible attack is identified or prevented.
The same guide describes separate licences for separate WordPress installations, with particular multisite and associated staging/development rules. It also explains automatic renewal and how licence count affects discounts. Compare your actual setup and renewals, rather than using a ten-site marketing comparison as a one-site price.
Configuration is part of the job
The firewall options guide distinguishes Enabled and Protecting, Learning Mode and Disabled, along with basic and extended protection. A plugin being installed does not by itself establish that the intended protection state is active. Review its current state and follow the documented configuration route.
Check essential legitimate workflows when changing controls. For example, a custom login form or a publishing action can have different requirements from the default administrator login. Record a recovery route for mistaken blocks and investigate the specific cause instead of broadly disabling protection to conceal a compatibility problem.
The licence documentation explains that Free and paid installations require a licence key. Keep account recovery under the site’s owner and handle keys privately in the service. Registering or holding a key is not evidence of a security outcome.
When a response service deserves a separate quote
If a website’s owner cannot investigate alerts or recover from an incident, compare a clearly written response scope. Ask who receives access, what monitoring is performed, what cleanup covers and when a response is available. Care or Response is a different operational purchase from Premium ticket support.
Also identify what your host already provides. Avoid paying twice for the same task without explaining the added value, and keep backups independent enough to reach during an account problem. A response service and a backup are complementary responsibilities rather than interchangeable protection labels.
Before choosing
- Assign ownership for updates, alerts and recovery.
- Compare the Free controls against the exact gap.
- Check host, plugin and login compatibility.
- Request the matched licence count, tax and support/service contract.
- Record renewal dates and verify the resulting configuration after setup.
Continue with free vs paid WordPress security and independent backup planning. This guide supports a documented choice; it does not establish Wordfence as a measured security winner or replace an installation-specific assessment.

How to read these prices
Compare the job, the full initial commitment and the renewal billing basis. Each company appears once. Open Change plan to view every recorded plan and term. Showing a plan does not change your two-plan comparison. The initial view uses a recorded non-trial option where available; it is not a ranking. Feature marks are tied to the documented plan, market, limits and billing conditions. Their check dates are independent from price rechecks. Europe is not one price or tax jurisdiction; select your actual billing country at checkout. These are researched public offers, not checkout quotes or hands-on tests. Currency values are not conversions. Listing order does not depend on commission.
