THE SHORT ANSWER

Use a representative recording and finished export to choose the smallest suitable plan and billing commitment.

Official Descript logo above separate conceptual media-hours and AI-credit capacity diagrams, with editor and billing considerations.

Descript brings recording, transcript-led editing and AI-assisted production into one workspace. That makes its pricing particularly relevant to publishers, educators and small teams that produce spoken content regularly. A useful subscription should cover the material you bring in, the editing tools you need and the people who must edit it. Choosing only from the monthly headline price leaves too much of that decision unexplained.

This guide separates the current subscription references from a practical production budget. The public figures were checked on 16 October 2026. The worked examples below are planning illustrations rather than measured Descript consumption or performance results. Begin with one ordinary job, then choose the smallest commitment that comfortably supports the work you intend to repeat.

At those annual references, one editor corresponds to US$192 for Hobbyist, US$288 for Creator or US$600 for Business before applicable tax. These totals are arithmetic from the listed annual monthly equivalents. They are not promotional offers. Separate the two usage budgets

Media minutes measure uploaded or recorded material; AI credits cover AI features. The current documentation describes shared drive allowances contributed by paid Editor seats and says unused monthly allowances do not roll over. Underlord requests can have variable credit costs, and the Usage tab records the charge. Free’s 100 AI credits are a one-time allocation, not a fresh monthly budget. Read the usage documentation alongside the live pricing card.

A finished ten-minute video can require much more than ten minutes of source material. Repeated takes, a longer interview and an imported demonstration all belong in the production plan. Write down the source duration before estimating your subscription needs. Keep that input estimate separate from the final running time and from any AI generation you expect to request.

For example, four tutorials might each begin with a twenty-minute recording. That gives an illustrative eighty minutes of source footage before additional takes or other imports. The final tutorials could be much shorter. This simple estimate helps define the media workload, but it says nothing about the AI credits needed to edit those recordings. Those depend on the actual features and requests used.

Free is a useful first evaluation

A first evaluation should answer a narrow question: can you produce the kind of spoken content you actually need? Choose a small permitted recording with representative sound, terminology and visual detail. Check the transcript, make a few deliberate edits and inspect the export route available in the account. This gives a more useful foundation than a demonstration with material unrelated to your work.

Do not spend the evaluation exploring every possible feature. Write a short acceptance list before starting: readable software labels, correct names in captions, natural edit points and a usable final file. If those requirements are met, consider the paid plan that matches recurring volume and delivery quality. Keep any account-specific export or watermark restriction visible in that decision.

Hobbyist suits a focused production rhythm

Hobbyist is worth comparing for a single editor with a defined series of recordings and a 1080p delivery requirement. The pricing card lists watermark-free 1080p export. A focused production calendar makes it easier to use a smaller subscription effectively: prepare the demonstration, record deliberate sections and keep a clear approval checklist instead of generating many unrelated alternatives.

The commercial value is the complete workflow. Consider the time spent locating a spoken section, revising its order, preparing captions and producing the final handoff. If transcript-led editing makes those jobs easier for your team, the subscription has a concrete role. This is an evaluation framework rather than a claim that every creator will save a specific amount of time.

Compare Creator when output requirements grow

Creator adds a larger stated monthly media and AI allowance and supports 4K export. Its pricing card permits up to three separately billed editors. The editor count is a purchasing limit rather than three people included in one seat price. When evaluating a small team, calculate the selected per-editor payment for the actual number of people who need editing access.

A 4K delivery requirement and a larger media budget are different reasons to upgrade. Establish which applies to your work. A tutorial viewed mostly inside a small help panel may not require the same output as footage that will be reframed or projected. Higher export capability also does not create detail missing from the source recording. Keep the desired output, source quality and recording method aligned.

Business needs a team-level reason

Business provides a larger listed allowance, Brand Studio and support for up to five separately billed editors. Treat those as a starting point for a team discussion. Identify who records, who edits, who approves and who only needs to review. Check the current membership roles before paying for editing access that a participant does not need.

Write down the repeatable elements of the production process: visual treatment, naming, review stages and the final destinations. A shared brand system becomes more valuable when several editors produce related work. If only one person occasionally records a demonstration, a larger subscription needs another concrete requirement to justify its ongoing cost.

Monthly or annual: choose from evidence

Monthly billing is a practical comparison while your workflow and production demand are still developing. Annual billing lowers the displayed monthly equivalent, but it changes the commitment to a prepaid year. Include quiet months, seasonal projects and changes in staffing when making the comparison. A busy launch week alone does not establish a recurring annual requirement.

Keep a short record for a representative completed job: source duration, tasks performed, usage shown and deliverables approved. Repeat that exercise with an ordinary project rather than the easiest possible sample. The result is an observed estimate for your workflow, not a universal cost per video. Revisit it when the source length or AI use changes substantially.

A clear purchase checklist

  • Identify the real editors and calculate the total seat commitment.
  • Budget source recordings separately from the duration of finished videos.
  • Confirm the export resolution and watermark conditions needed for delivery.
  • Keep monthly media allowance and AI credits as separate figures.
  • Read the full annual payment, next renewal and applicable tax before subscribing.
  • Review actual usage from a finished job before increasing the commitment.

Descript is a compelling candidate when the work centres on recorded speech, tutorials and reusable video content. Free gives a focused way to evaluate the approach; Hobbyist covers a smaller paid production rhythm; Creator and Business deserve comparison when output, volume or team requirements grow. The best plan is the one connected to a repeatable result you can review and deliver confidently.
