For a standard .com with external DNS, start by comparing Dynadot’s standard registration. Cloudflare costs less in this shortlist if you accept Cloudflare DNS. Namecheap has a higher published renewal; NameSilo’s lower program rate requires pre-funded credit. Compare the renewal and restrictions as well as the first-year discount.

Choose a registrar you can afford to renew and can recover when something goes wrong. For one ordinary .com, the cheapest first year is only part of the bill. Your registrar manages the registration; your DNS provider routes the address; hosting and mailboxes are separate services. They can be different companies.
This shortlist compares four providers using official prices and documentation checked on 10 October 2026. It is researched guidance, not a support, speed or account-recovery test. Start with the situation that matches you.
Which registrar fits your situation?
- Low renewal cost with a choice of DNS provider: compare Dynadot’s standard .com registration. It is cheaper than the Namecheap and NameSilo retail references below and allows external nameservers. Treat its partner-registrar coupon as a different offer.
- You already want Cloudflare DNS: Cloudflare has the lowest first-year and renewal reference among the four main rows below. Conditional coupons can change the first-year comparison. Domains registered there must use Cloudflare nameservers.
- You want Namecheap while choosing DNS separately: it supports that setup, but budget for its higher renewal. The current first-year offer reduces the initial registration; it does not reduce the published renewal.
- You are managing several domains and can use a funded account: examine NameSilo’s Discount Program. For one domain, compare its ordinary retail price first; a lower program rate comes with payment conditions.
Already own the address? Connecting it to a website usually does not require changing registrar. Use the transfer checklist when you actually want another company to manage the registration.
Compare the first year and the next renewal
The same scenario applies to every row: one available, non-premium .com; one initial year followed by one annual renewal; USD; no hosting, mailbox or other extras; before taxes. The two-year column adds the observed registration and renewal rates. It is not a two-year upfront quote or a guarantee that next year’s rate will stay the same.
| Provider / reference | First year | Annual renewal | Two-year reference | Condition to notice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dynadot Standard registration | US$10.88 | US$10.88 | US$21.76 | ICANN included; excludes the separate partner-registrar coupon. |
| Cloudflare Published .com rate | US$10.46 | US$10.46 | US$20.92 | Registry and ICANN costs included; Cloudflare nameservers required. |
| Namecheap Current first-year offer | US$11.48 | US$18.68 | US$30.16 | Includes US$0.20 ICANN each year. The normal first-year reference is US$15.18 including that fee. |
| NameSilo Ordinary retail, 1–49 order band | US$17.29 | US$17.29 | US$34.58 | ICANN included; excludes Discount Program and volume rates. |
Namecheap’s published normal registration is US$14.98 before its US$0.20 fee. Using that normal rate instead of the temporary first-year promotion makes the same two-year reference US$33.86. A new-customer coupon has separate eligibility; do not assume every visitor can use it.
Check temporary-offer eligibility: the current official .com offer checked on 16 October 2026 lists US$11.28 before the mandatory US$0.20 ICANN fee, or US$11.48 including it. A separate eligible new-customer code offer is US$6.48 before the fee, US$6.68 including it, limited to one domain purchase per user/household. Confirm the required code, name availability and checkout conditions. Current multi-year renewal discounts do not establish what a renewal years later will cost.
Buying from Europe: these are USD product references. Check billing country, actual payment currency, tax and any conversion cost before paying. A .eu, .co.uk or .pt has its own eligibility and pricing; this .com table does not quote those extensions.
Privacy and DNS: what is included?
| Provider | Public registration-data privacy | Can you use another DNS provider? |
|---|---|---|
| Namecheap | Free privacy for eligible domains, including .com. | Yes. Choose BasicDNS or another provider’s nameservers. |
| Dynadot | Free domain privacy is supported for .com. | Yes on the standard registration compared here. |
| NameSilo | Free WHOIS privacy via PrivacyGuardian for eligible .com domains. | Yes. Its own DNS management requires its own nameservers; using external DNS is also supported. |
| Cloudflare | Free redaction where permitted; state/province and country can remain public. | For the domain’s authoritative nameservers, no. Using another provider for those requires transferring the registration out. |
Free privacy does not mean every registration field disappears, every extension is eligible or your account cannot be taken over. Use strong authentication and an independently recoverable contact address. Before changing nameservers, copy the website, MX and email-authentication records; those records do not automatically follow every change.
DNS choice is only part of hosting compatibility. A host’s included certificate or CDN can have separate domain/DNS eligibility conditions. Confirm the exact hosting configuration and HTTPS path before buying; registering elsewhere does not by itself make hosting incompatible. Read domain versus hosting if those services are still unclear.
Two discounts that change the comparison
Dynadot’s partner-registrar promotion
The official 899COM help page advertises US$8.99 for the first year, subject to a limited promotional allocation, while the .com page also displays the code beside other pricing. We have kept that coupon out of the standard-price row. The documented offer initially places the domain with a partner registrar. Renewal transfers it to Dynadot and uses the normal rate. During the partner phase, DNSSEC, Smart Folders and Afternic Fast Transfer/Sedo MLS are unavailable, and privacy stays enabled and locked. The first 60 days prevent renewal and auto-renewal-setting changes; there is no grace deletion. The partner handles abuse reports, which can lengthen appeals. Review these terms instead of treating the coupon as identical to standard registration.
NameSilo’s funded-account Discount Program
The current 0+ tier lists US$11.05 for .com registration and renewal. Joining is explicit, payment must use Account Funds, and each funding transaction requires at least US$50. Coupons cannot be combined with the program. There is no permanently required minimum balance, but the funding minimum also applies for 30 days after leaving.
At unchanged rates, the domain charges for one registration plus one renewal consume US$22.10 of credit, before applicable taxes or funding fees. Starting with an empty Account Funds balance, the minimum initial top-up is US$50; unused funds remain in the account. Funding fees depend on the payment method: a wire transfer has a US$15 fee deducted from the deposit. An existing sufficient balance does not require another top-up. Do not compare a credit-consumption figure with another provider’s cash checkout total as if they were the same thing.
Already own a .com? Check the transfer before paying
Incoming one-year, non-premium .com references checked 11 October 2026, USD before taxes: Dynadot US$10.88 and Cloudflare US$10.46, including ICANN. Namecheap US$11.68 includes its US$0.20 fee. This remains the explicitly dated transfer reference; confirm the current transfer quote rather than relying on an expired campaign. Registration or funded-account rates do not establish NameSilo’s actual transfer charge.
A transfer normally keeps remaining time and adds one year, up to ten years. If a .com expired and was renewed, completing the transfer during the registry’s 45-day Auto-Renew Grace Period after the original expiry can remove that automatic renewal year: no net added year.
Initial registration, a previous transfer or a material Change of Registrant can trigger 60-day restrictions; some registrars allow opting out before the registrant change. Cloudflare requires active full DNS setup before transfer; its authoritative nameservers remain required.
When auto-renew charges, and what cancellation costs
Disabling future auto-renewal does not reverse a completed charge. Check the billing date, not just expiry. These documented conditions are not a promise that your order qualifies.
| Provider | Auto-renew timing | Completed renewal: refund and cancellation limits |
|---|---|---|
| Namecheap | Starts 30 days before expiry. | Renewals are generally non-refundable; at sole discretion, most TLDs may qualify for a valid-reason refund if cancellation is processed within five days (120 hours), subject to exclusions. |
| Dynadot | Starts 15 days before expiry. | Request less than five days after completion; acknowledgement and immediate domain deletion required, losing remaining registration time. |
| NameSilo | Attempts at the start of the expiry month. | Cancellation within three days ordinarily deletes the domain and forfeits remaining time; certain automatic renewals are exceptions. |
| Cloudflare | Enabled by default; first attempt approximately 30 days before expiry. | Completed registration, renewal and transfer fees are non-refundable. |
Keep control after the purchase
- Use the business’s account and recovery details. A contractor can help, but should not be the only person able to recover the domain. Keep an accessible recovery address and record who can change payment or DNS settings.
- Separate registration from connection. Changing DNS can connect a new host without transferring registration. Transferring registrar does not move your website files or mailbox history.
- Check the transfer procedure before committing. Unlocking, authorization codes, access to the relevant email and recent-registration/transfer restrictions can affect a move. Do not leave this until expiry.
- Record renewal responsibility. Check the renewal price, date, payment method and notices. Auto-renewal still depends on a valid payment method and the provider’s terms.
For a deeper two-provider choice, read Namecheap versus Dynadot. This four-provider shortlist explains where to begin; that comparison examines the narrower decision.
What not to buy automatically
You do not need to buy hosting, email, a builder and security products from the registrar just because they appear in its cart. A domain can be registered before the website is ready. If a website plan includes a domain for one year, check eligibility, the next renewal and what happens when the website subscription ends.
Compare the complete setup with separate domain and hosting. A bundle is useful when the services fit; an included first year is not a reason to accept an unsuitable hosting commitment.
Choose your next step
First .com with external DNS flexibility: compare the standard Dynadot and Namecheap offers above. Already committed to Cloudflare DNS: check Cloudflare Registrar and its published prices. A domain portfolio: read NameSilo’s funding conditions before selecting its discount rate.
Before paying, confirm the exact spelling, availability, premium status, selected registration period, mandatory fees and renewal in the actual order. Remove extras you do not need. The plan links in this guide use public destinations until an affiliate relationship is approved and activated; no provider’s payout determines this shortlist.
