A private connection, at home and away
A VPN is useful when you want to protect the connection from your device to a VPN server, especially while using shared networks. With NordVPN, one account can have up to ten simultaneous connections, so a phone, laptop and other supported devices can fit within the same allowance.
Basic is the focused starting point for the VPN. Complete is worth comparing when you also want its password manager, cloud storage and added protection tools. Prime adds a separate layer of US identity-protection benefits for eligible customers.
What you can actually use NordVPN for
The VPN connection and the higher-plan extras solve different tasks. Use this breakdown to decide which ones belong in your setup.
Encrypted traffic on shared networks
NordVPN encrypts traffic between your device and a VPN server. It can be useful on public Wi-Fi and changes the public IP address websites see. It does not make an account anonymous after you sign in.
Kill Switch
A Kill Switch can limit traffic exposure if the VPN disconnects. Its controls and behaviour differ by operating system, so check the option in the app you will actually use.
NordLynx and device apps
NordLynx is one of NordVPN’s connection protocols. NordVPN provides apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, plus browser extensions; the available controls vary by platform.
Scam and phishing protection
Basic includes DNS-based protection against known scam and phishing sites while the VPN is connected. This is different from the more extensive antivirus tools in higher plans.
Passwords, files and extra protection
Complete adds NordPass, 1 TB of NordLocker storage, next-gen antivirus and ad/tracker blocking. Check platform support: advanced desktop protection is not identical to the mobile feature set.
Identity-protection benefits
Prime builds on Complete with Coveron identity protection. Country, state and policy conditions matter: insurance benefits exclude New York, and US-specific benefits should not be assumed available elsewhere.
Exposure alerts and optional extras
The current US-facing matrix includes basic Dark Web Monitor with Basic, while Complete and Prime add broader monitoring. An alert prompts an account review; it does not erase exposed information. Dedicated IP is an optional checkout addition. Check country and eligibility before choosing monitoring or identity benefits.

NordVPN subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled. The published renewal reference is useful for comparison, but your order summary and renewal notice determine your actual payment; future prices can change.
The 30-day money-back guarantee applies to an eligible first purchase, not a renewal. Request a refund through the appropriate support or seller channel. Purchases through Apple, Amazon or another reseller have their own processing route; check the policy for the way you buy.
Make sure the plan fits your devices
Will every protection feature work on my phone?
No. The VPN apps cover mobile and desktop, but the more extensive antivirus and malware-protection features have platform-specific requirements. Check the current device specifications before choosing a higher tier for one particular feature.
Does one subscription cover all my devices at once?
One NordVPN account allows up to ten simultaneous connections. Count devices that will connect together, rather than simply the number you own. A browser extension protects its own browser traffic rather than replacing a full-device VPN setup.
Does a VPN replace website security or account protection?
No. Keep multi-factor authentication, software updates and restorable website backups in place. A VPN protects a connection; it does not repair a compromised website or remove the need to check where you sign in.
