Namecheap sells domain registrations and several separate services, including hosting and Private Email. The useful question is which of those services your project actually needs. Registering an address does not automatically give you a website, and owning a domain does not by itself create a mailbox. This researched guide uses official pages checked on 6 October 2026. We have not tested a paid Namecheap account or assessed support quality.
Start with the domain decision
For a small project, you can make the domain decision before choosing a host. Keep the registration in an account controlled by the owner, record the renewal date and use an account recovery address you can access independently. Then compare the exact name and extension. A short first-year offer is a poor substitute for checking whether the renewal fits your annual budget.
A domain’s registration, DNS and hosting can be handled by different services. That flexibility is useful if you expect to move your site later, but it also creates more settings to manage. Someone needs to know which account holds the registration and which provider actually answers DNS queries. See domain versus hosting before assuming one invoice covers everything.
The .com and email costs we could verify
| Decision | Check before buying | Reason to skip an upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Actual sites, users, storage or audience in the selected plan | The extra capacity has no defined use |
| Commitment | Full upfront amount, renewal period and temporary extras | The commitment exceeds the available budget |
| Operation | Who will manage updates, access, recovery and the required workflow | A purchase leaves essential work without an owner |
The public .com reference checked on 17 October 2026 is US$6.48 for an eligible new customer, before the mandatory US$0.20 ICANN fee: US$6.68 before applicable taxes. A code and the one-domain-per-user/household restriction apply. We do not treat that conditional offer as the normal price. Recheck the actual checkout for your chosen name. [Official .com page] The domain price list explains the ICANN fee; a different extension can have a very different renewal.
What Private Email adds
Private Email is a mailbox service with its own subscription, rather than a domain registration bonus that permanently supplies email. The current comparison distinguishes Launch, Expand and Scale. Launch includes one mailbox and a 5 GB quota, while larger plans and extra mailboxes change the cost. IMAP and SMTP are listed, so a buyer can investigate using a regular mail client as well as webmail. [Current Private Email comparison]
Decide how many people need separate sign-ins and how much storage their mail will use. An alias can give one person another address, but it should not be budgeted as an independent mailbox for a colleague. A domain used only for professional email may not need website hosting yet. That can keep a first setup smaller, provided the mailbox and DNS are configured correctly.
Check who controls DNS
Namecheap’s documentation offers default DNS and custom nameservers. Switching between providers does not automatically carry your old records to the new DNS service. Save website and email records first, then recreate and verify them in the active zone. Changing a website destination while overlooking the mail records can interrupt email even when the website looks correct. [Nameserver documentation]
Before any migration, make a small inventory: registrar, nameservers, website destination, mailbox provider and renewal dates. This is especially helpful when a freelancer initially sets up the site. Ask for owner-controlled access and documentation instead of letting a supplier’s personal account become the only route to your domain. That advice applies regardless of which registrar you choose.
Compare an alternative without a referral incentive
Cloudflare Registrar is a relevant alternative to investigate: its documentation describes registration at registry/ICANN cost without a markup, but it requires Cloudflare nameservers. That constraint matters if you want to use another authoritative DNS provider. We have not verified a checkout price for your particular domain, so this is not a claim that it will always cost less. [Registrar overview] [Nameserver FAQ]
Compare the same extension and name, including renewal, privacy eligibility, transfer rules and DNS flexibility. Also check whether your host’s first-year domain bundle changes the cost later. The least expensive initial registration may be less convenient for a setup that needs a different DNS workflow. Compare the service you will actually operate, not just the headline promotion.
A practical buying checklist
Keep domain, mailbox and website hosting as separate rows in your budget. Confirm ownership, renewal and tax, then decide which optional services can wait. Test receiving and replying from the mailbox after setup; a forwarding address alone is not the same thing. Read business email without a website and separating domain and hosting for the next decisions. Namecheap is one documented option, not a universal lowest-cost winner.
Shared hosting: USD references
Stellar is a separate hosting purchase, not something a domain registration automatically includes. On 8 October 2026 the US plan card showed a 30-day trial followed by a US$2.28 monthly equivalent for the annual option, with three sites, 20 GB SSD and 30 mailboxes. An exact selected-plan US annual invoice was not verified.
The European page explicitly showed US$26.88 annually and US$55.88/year renewal. Its US$2.28 monthly display would multiply to US$27.36, so use the explicit annual figure. The EU card describes 20 GB Cloud Storage; a generic technical table still says SSD. Confirm the selected region’s entitlement rather than assuming the descriptions are interchangeable.
The May 2026 renewal notice lists Stellar renewals of US$5.88 monthly, US$55.88 annually or US$102.88 for two years. For a yearly trial package, the first payment after the trial uses the after-trial price; later renewals use the renewal schedule. The trial’s paid-term start has not been reconciled, so these observations do not produce a duration budget. Tax and checkout are unconfirmed.
Namecheap’s currency policy says final charges are USD; any local-currency display is informational. Stellar’s internal backups are not guaranteed. Choose it only with a defined recovery arrangement, and compare the cost of any additional tools. The hosting account’s mailboxes are separate from Private Email.
Read hosting inclusions and a recoverable WordPress backup before buying. Use Comparisons to select Hosting and Namecheap for the matching price records. These are researched plan descriptions, not paid-account tests or a universal lowest-price recommendation.
