THE SHORT ANSWER

Pay for a security capability or response scope when it closes a real gap. Keep application updates, access, monitoring, cleanup and backup recovery as separate responsibilities.

Pay for a security capability or response service when it closes an identified gap. A paid plugin does not replace current software, controlled access and a recoverable backup. This guide explains the jobs and responsibilities without recommending a scanner, firewall or cleanup company.

Complete the operating process first

The official WordPress hardening guide treats updates, credentials, permissions and backups as parts of risk management. Name an owner for core, plugin and theme updates. Remove unused software, limit administrator access and make sure somebody receives and acts on alerts.

A fictional publication buys a premium licence but nobody reads its alert mailbox. The licence does not fix that missing responsibility. A maintained installation, protected accounts and a recovery rehearsal can be more immediately useful than another unused feature.

Separate prevention, detection, response and recovery

JobQuestions to askResponsibility to retain
PreventionWhich controls and update process are configured?Keep software and access under review.
DetectionWhat is inspected, how often and what is excluded?Check findings and resolve false positives or missed scope.
ResponseWho investigates and repairs an incident under what contract?Provide controlled access, preserve evidence and agree scope.
RecoveryWhich files and database data can be restored?Check the copy, restore procedure and newer legitimate changes.

A firewall is not an application update strategy. A file scan is not proof that the database, user accounts and scheduled tasks were checked. Feature names describe scope, not independently measured effectiveness. Read the exact service description and limitations for the task you need.

Ask what changes when you pay: update timing, scheduled inspection, site allowances, alerting, support or hands-on incident work. Those are different purchases. A support ticket for operating software does not necessarily include investigating and cleaning a compromised site.

Match the licence to the actual installations, staging sites and supported environments. Confirm renewal, tax, storage and response exclusions. Do not multiply an advertised per-site headline by an assumed number of sites without checking the actual package.

Keep backup purchases in the recovery layer

A separate backup service can help when the host account or included recovery system is unavailable. BlogVault is a backup-and-recovery option to evaluate for that specific requirement. Check frequency, retention, supported sites, access and the restore workflow; this is not a recommendation for a firewall or a guarantee that an infected copy is clean.

Before adding a subscription, inventory the copies and restore access you already have. Decide how much recent work may be lost between copies and how new orders or submissions would be reconciled. The backup verification guide separates a stored copy from evidence of a successful restore.

Test changes without losing access

Use a suitable test environment for controls that can affect logins, forms or legitimate visitors. Preserve a recovery route for configuration errors. Several overlapping plugins can add conflicts and work rather than forming a coherent process.

If the site is already compromised, start with the incident checklist. Containment, account recovery and evidence come before shopping for another plugin. For a recurring budget, separate security administration from backup and response costs.

Backups help you recover; a firewall helps prevent compromise. They complement each other rather than replace each other.

Good fit for

One modest WordPress site needing daily offsite backups and stated retention.

Consider the trade-off

1 site; 20 GB; daily backups; 30-day retention; 1-day staging; offsite storage and migration; real-time backup on higher tiers.

Choose another option if: You need real-time backups, more than 20 GB or staging beyond one day.
