Evaluate Wordfence for a WordPress endpoint-control job and Sucuri for the documented cloud firewall route. Compare Care/Response with cleanup-capable Sucuri Platform when human response is required. A software or standalone-firewall purchase alone does not fill that operator gap.

Wordfence and Sucuri are worth comparing only after separating two needs: filtering attacks and recovering from an infection. Wordfence offers WordPress security software and separate hands-on services. Sucuri separates its cloud firewall from a Security Platform that includes cleanup. Comparing the cheapest subscriptions without matching those jobs produces the wrong answer.
We reviewed official documentation on 8 October 2026. We have not simulated attacks, cleaned a site, changed DNS or measured performance and response times. Architecture and scope come from provider documentation; the buying framework is editorial analysis.
The operator changes the decision
Imagine a small WordPress publication whose owner keeps software current, checks alerts and has a working restore procedure. It needs a clear firewall and scan configuration, with someone available to investigate findings. Compare software and relevant host controls for that requirement.
Now imagine the same publication with no one able to investigate suspicious files or restore service after an incident. A premium plugin does not automatically supply that person. This version of the business should compare a defined human response service, including coverage, access requirements and the sites involved.
If the site is already infected, make that known when checking service eligibility. Buying future-facing protection is not proof that the current incident has been resolved. Preserve appropriate records and involve the responsible host or qualified incident handler before destructive cleanup work.
Where the firewall operates
| Job | Wordfence | Sucuri |
|---|---|---|
| Firewall location | PHP application-level firewall at the WordPress endpoint | Cloud firewall between visitors and the site’s origin server |
| Setup dependency | Plugin/firewall configuration and server compatibility | DNS routing and origin/CDN configuration |
| Basic software option | Free firewall and scanner with delayed new rules/signatures | Do not confuse a free scanner/plugin with the paid cloud firewall |
| Human incident work | Evaluate Care or Response rather than assuming Premium ticket support includes cleanup | Evaluate Security Platform rather than standalone Firewall |
| Recover content | Keep a separate backup/restore plan | Backups are a separate product or responsibility |

What paying for Wordfence changes
Wordfence Free is a real firewall and scan option, with a 30-day delay for newly released threat rules and signatures. Premium adds real-time threat data and other features. The timing difference should not be expanded into a claim that Free offers no protection, or that paid data prevents every incident.
The firewall states also matter: Learning Mode, Enabled and Protecting, and Disabled are not interchangeable. Installation alone does not prove that the intended protection state is active. Someone still needs to configure it, inspect alerts and verify legitimate publishing and login workflows.
Wordfence Care’s conditions include business-hours incident assistance and a connection to Wordfence Central. Server isolation and other sites in the hosting account can affect eligibility. Confirm the actual setup before treating a one-site service price as coverage for everything on the server.
What the Sucuri purchase must include
Sucuri’s cloud firewall requires the documented website DNS routing. It does not replace the host storing the site. Preserve the existing records, including mail configuration, and check how the firewall should interact with any current CDN and the origin server.
For human cleanup, the relevant comparison is the Security Platform. Its current page separates packages and describes first-response estimates. A first response is not necessarily completion, and the published estimate is not an independently observed result.
Confirm HTTPS and certificate handling for the specific package, including whether you must bring or transfer a custom certificate and which tier supports that requirement. Basic HTTPS support and handling an existing purchased certificate are different questions. Match the package to the site’s actual configuration.
Compare the complete service budget
Compare the current plans below. For an operator-managed site, compare the required software/firewall scope. For a team needing human assistance, compare cleanup-capable services. Match installation count, term, currency, tax, renewal and exclusions before calling one less expensive.
Include independent backup storage and a restore route in either budget. If the host already supplies incident work, obtain its written scope before duplicating the subscription. Two products with security in their names may perform different tasks, while two cleanup contracts may overlap.
Choose around the responsibility gap
Shortlist Wordfence when WordPress endpoint controls fit and there is a named operator, or when the selected Care/Response service meets the actual hands-on requirement. Skip an upgrade bought solely for a badge or a marketing score that does not explain the operational improvement.
Shortlist Sucuri when a cloud firewall route fits the hosting setup and the selected package covers the needed monitoring or response. Skip standalone Firewall as the assumed answer to an existing infection. Do not change DNS without a documented route back and a check of essential services.
Consider the host’s existing security service and other suitable providers as alternatives. Keep updates, access controls and backups in the operating plan. Buying one product does not assign responsibility for all of them.
Questions about protection and cleanup
Is a scanner the same as malware removal?
No. Identifying a suspicious file and safely investigating, removing and recovering from an incident are different tasks. Check who will perform the latter and what the contract covers.
Can a firewall replace WordPress updates?
Do not plan around that assumption. Maintain a supported update process and verify that the site still works. A firewall rule is not evidence that the underlying vulnerable software has been corrected.
Can we run both providers together?
Do not infer compatibility from their different architecture. Check the exact combination, origin restrictions and legitimate flows with the vendors and host. This research has not tested such a deployment.
Does cleanup replace a backup?
No. A cleanup service and a recoverable copy solve different problems. Keep a restoration route for deleted, damaged or mistakenly changed content as well as security incidents.
Write the operating plan first
Name who configures protection, receives alerts and requests incident help. Then verify coverage and retain a restore procedure. Continue with free versus paid WordPress security, the security and backup budget and a backup you can restore.
Costs alongside this guide
These tiers have different protection and response responsibilities. A firewall, a cleanup service and a recoverable backup solve separate jobs.
When you need human security assistance
Wordfence Care and Sucuri Platform include documented human assistance with different workflows and eligibility. Care incident response is during business hours. Investigate Wordfence Response separately for round-the-clock incident response; Free and Premium require an operator.
