Shortlist Wix when its documented business tools fit the required booking or selling workflow. Shortlist Squarespace when its page and content model fits the business and all required extras are budgeted. Evaluate the same task before choosing either.

Choose Wix or Squarespace by the work your business needs the website to complete. A service page with an enquiry form, an appointment business collecting deposits and a shop taking orders need different features. Neither provider is the better purchase for every small business, and a lower advertised site price can omit the part you actually need.
Our research uses official documentation checked on 8 October 2026. The decision framework and example below are editorial analysis. We have not timed either editor, purchased a plan, tested payments or compared live site speed, support or Google rankings.
Compare the same business in both builders
Imagine a two-person repair studio. It needs six service pages, opening hours, a contact form, a custom domain and occasional articles answering customer questions. At first, bookings happen by phone. Later, the studio may accept online appointments and deposits. These are two separate purchasing stages.
For the first stage, compare the simplest paid site that meets those requirements. For the second, add the exact scheduling and payment setup. Do not compare a Wix booking-capable package against a Squarespace website subscription while silently leaving the latter’s scheduling bill out of the calculation.
Use the same photographs, service description, long headline and mobile navigation in a trial design. Ask the person who will maintain the website to change opening hours and create a second article. That exercise gives your business relevant evidence about the workflow; a template screenshot alone does not.
The feature differences worth checking
| Requirement | Wix | Squarespace |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted business site | Paid plans combine site hosting and custom-domain use | Website subscription provides the hosted building and publishing route |
| Accept online payments | Check a payment-capable plan such as Core rather than assuming Light covers selling | Check the selected plan’s commerce scope and both transaction and processing fees |
| Appointments | Wix Bookings has documented charging options; online payment requires an upgrade | Include any required scheduling subscription in the quote |
| People maintaining the site | Collaborator allowances vary by plan | Check contributor access for the selected plan and tasks |
| Move elsewhere later | The working Wix site depends on Wix infrastructure | Some content can export, with substantial exclusions |

Build the complete recurring budget
Compare the current plans below. Match currency, billing country, subscription length and the initial amount due before comparing monthly equivalents. A local-looking page address does not establish the currency that checkout will charge. Annual billing can mean a full upfront payment rather than the freedom to leave after one month.
List the site subscription, domain renewal, business mailbox, appointment software and any paid extension separately. For selling, add payment costs and the relevant platform transaction fee. Squarespace’s fee documentation distinguishes transaction fees from payment processing and shows country-dependent rates. A plan without one kind of fee can still incur the other.
For the repair studio, a booking upgrade only makes economic sense if it solves an actual problem: missed appointments, manual scheduling work or a necessary deposit process. Buying it before anyone uses that process adds a recurring expense. Conversely, selecting the cheapest brochure plan then forcing appointments through an awkward workaround can create more administration.
When to choose or skip each option
Shortlist Wix when the documented Wix business tools match a defined service workflow and the person maintaining the site can manage the resulting configuration. Skip a higher tier when its selling, collaborator or marketing allowance has no specific job. Its feature list is a reason to investigate, not evidence that your business needs every feature.
Shortlist Squarespace when its website and content structure suits the pages you need and the full quote includes your required tools. Skip a subscription selected only for the appearance of a demo if maintaining the actual site would require repeated help. We have not established that one editor is easier for your team.
Consider another route if complex editorial permissions, custom integrations or an unusual migration requirement drives the project. Self-hosted WordPress is a relevant alternative, with hosting, maintenance and recovery work included in the decision. An existing business profile or social page may also be sufficient while a very small business validates demand.
Check the exit before building everything
Wix explains that its sites run on Wix servers, although the domain can be managed elsewhere. Owning the text and photographs does not make the full working site portable to an arbitrary host.
Squarespace exports certain content to WordPress XML. Style settings, custom CSS and various page or block types are excluded. Treat that as a content migration aid, with rebuilding work still to assess. Keep original media, a page inventory and control of the registrar account regardless of your choice.
Common small-business questions
Which builder is better for SEO?
This comparison cannot establish a ranking winner. Evaluate page titles, useful content, stable URLs, mobile reading and the publishing workflow you will maintain. A built-in SEO tool does not prove that a page will outrank competitors.
Is a free domain the same as free business email?
No. Domain registration, mailbox hosting and the website are separate services even when sold together. Check the promotional duration and subsequent renewal for each included extra.
Should a business buy the commerce plan immediately?
Only when it needs the specific selling functionality. Define the transaction, payment method and customer journey first; an enquiry-only site may have no reason to pay for checkout.
Can I keep the same domain if I change builders?
Domain control and website rebuilding are separate questions. Keep the registrar account under the business’s control and plan web and mail DNS carefully when moving.
Your next step
Write one page listing today’s requirements, likely additions and who maintains them. Build the representative page, obtain matched quotes and keep an exit checklist. Continue with website-builder costs in USD, a builder versus WordPress and using a custom domain with a free builder.
