THE SHORT ANSWER

Web hosting is the service that keeps a website available to visitors over the internet. It provides somewhere to store the site and a system that responds when a browser asks for a page. A domain name is the address people use to reach that system; the hosting is what actually serves the website.

A miniature website building rests on a server foundation connected to a visitor laptop by a clear network route, domain signpost separate. Fundamental hosting concept.

You need a way to host a public website, but you do not necessarily need to buy a separate hosting plan. A hosted website builder can provide the hosting as part of its service. The useful first question is therefore: what will I use to build the site, and what does that choice already include?

What hosting actually does

A browser cannot read the private folder on your laptop just because you created a page there. A public site needs an internet-accessible service that receives requests and sends the appropriate content back. Google Cloud’s hosting introduction describes the server space and delivery role that make this possible.

Some sites are collections of prepared HTML, images and styles. Others generate pages from software and a database when someone visits. This difference matters when choosing a service: the environment must support the kind of website you intend to run. Buying more storage does not resolve a missing software requirement.

For self-hosted WordPress, check the WordPress project’s current requirements. It recommends a supported PHP and database environment and HTTPS support. A service that only accepts static files is a different product from a server configured to run WordPress.

Domain, content and hosting are separate parts

PartIts jobWhat it does not provide by itself
DomainA name such as example.com that you control through a registration accountYour pages, an editor or a complete mail service
Website content and softwareThe pages, images, design and functions visitors useA public server simply because the files exist
HostingThe service that runs or stores the site and answers visitors’ requestsAn original article, a suitable design or an automatically successful business
The three parts of a typical website

DNS helps a browser find the destination associated with a name. It does not contain your finished website. MDN explains the domain lookup process: finding an address is followed by communication with the web server.

The distinction becomes useful when something goes wrong. A domain can be registered correctly while its website is unavailable. A website can work at a temporary address before a custom domain is connected. These are different problems and should be investigated separately.

A fictional personal-site example

Imagine that Maya wants a portfolio with an introduction, six project pages and a contact address. She has written the text and prepared the images. She has not bought anything yet.

If Maya chooses self-hosted WordPress, she needs a compatible hosting environment, a WordPress installation and a decision about her public address. She can purchase the domain through the same company as the hosting or keep it with another registrar. The domain connection is a setup task, not a reason the services must be bought together.

If she chooses a hosted builder, she should first check its existing package. Wix states that hosting is built into its website offering. Wix also documents a free site URL and a site-plan requirement for connecting a custom domain in its domain guide. Those are Wix’s conditions, rather than a promise about all builders.

Maya’s next purchase should address an actual gap. If the builder already runs the site, a second generic hosting account would not automatically improve it. If she wants a custom-domain inbox, that is another item to investigate; it is not established by the existence of hosting.

What a hosting purchase does not guarantee

Hosting is one part of operating a site. It does not write the content, remove every security risk, guarantee search rankings or make visitors appear. A plan’s advertised features also do not prove that your particular site will load quickly.

A useful way to assign responsibility is to list the routine jobs: software updates, backups, restore checks, account access and help when an error occurs. Some providers take on more of these jobs than others. The label on the sales page is less useful than an explicit explanation of what is included and what you still need to do.

A simple portfolio and a membership application can require very different resources even if both have ten visible pages. Start with the functions, maintenance needs and consequences of downtime, rather than an assumed page-count formula.

A checklist before buying hosting

  1. Choose the publishing system. Decide whether you want self-hosted WordPress, a hosted builder or a static site. Check what that system needs.
  2. Check for a bundle you already have. Read the builder or platform documentation before purchasing another hosting service.
  3. List required functions. Note forms, file downloads, stores or member access. Confirm that the intended plan supports them.
  4. Separate website, domain and email costs. Record what is included, how long any inclusion lasts and what renews separately.
  5. Assign maintenance. Identify who updates software and who can restore the site after a problem.
  6. Read the limits. Look beyond storage to site counts, database support, usage policies and upgrade options.
  7. Compare the commitment. Record the payment due now, the term covered and the renewal conditions.

If you are only exploring an idea, you may not need to pay immediately. A local WordPress installation can help you learn and draft content before selecting public hosting. A builder’s free option may also be useful for evaluation, subject to its own restrictions.

Your next step

If the terminology is still unclear, read domain vs hosting. When you are ready to assess an offer, use the hosting-plan checklist. For a platform that supplies the server for you, see whether website builders include hosting.
