A hosting plan gives you access to a service that stores or runs a website. Beyond that, the contents vary. One plan may combine hosting, domain registration and mailboxes; another may provide only the website environment. The safest way to read an offer is to separate the resource allowance, the included services and the payment conditions.

A hosting plan gives you access to a service that stores or runs a website. Beyond that, the contents vary. One plan may combine hosting, domain registration and mailboxes; another may provide only the website environment. The safest way to read an offer is to separate the resource allowance, the included services and the payment conditions.
Do not treat a long feature list as proof that everything is covered. The useful question is what each feature allows you to do, for how long, with which limits, and who pays when those limits are reached.
Storage, resources and site limits
AWS’s hosting introduction identifies storage, data transfer and email among possible hosting features. These are categories to investigate, rather than a universal package. Your chosen offer’s specification and terms are the relevant evidence for an actual purchase.
| Item | Question to answer | Useful follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Which files and data use the allowance? | Do mail, staging sites or local backups count? |
| CPU and memory | How is processing capacity allocated or limited? | What happens during a sustained busy period? |
| Data transfer | Is transfer metered, and over which period? | Are large downloads or media delivery permitted? |
| Websites | How many independent sites can be hosted? | Do test sites and additional domains count? |
| Databases | Is the required database system supported? | Are there database size or number limits? |
| Usage policy | What activities are restricted? | Is there a suspension, overage or upgrade process? |
“Unlimited” should trigger a terms check. Ask which resource the word applies to and whether acceptable-use or resource conditions qualify it. Do not translate unlimited data transfer into unlimited processing capacity, storage or support.
For a fictional photography portfolio, the owner might first reduce oversized images and move original download archives out of the website’s public folder. That is a more specific resource discussion than buying a larger plan because there are many photographs. For a booking site, the important question might instead be how the application behaves when several people submit reservations at once.
Check software compatibility separately. The WordPress requirements identify the recommended PHP, database and HTTPS environment. A large storage figure does not compensate for an incompatible software platform.
Hosting, domain and email are separate line items
Make three rows in your purchase notes: website service, domain registration and email service. A bundle may fill all three rows, but their renewal dates, conditions and cancellation rules may differ.
ICANN explains that domain registration terms, including fees and renewals, come from the agreement with the registrar. See its registration-process guide. If a host includes a domain promotion, check the extension, eligible term, registrant account and renewal price before treating it as an ongoing inclusion.
As one narrow example, Wix’s domain documentation describes a one-year voucher with select plans. That is an initial benefit with conditions. It is not evidence that domain registration remains free indefinitely.
For email, establish whether the offer supplies full mailboxes, forwarding addresses, a trial or a separate paid product. Count the people who need accounts and check mailbox capacity, access methods and sending conditions. A contact form on a website is not the same thing as an inbox you can sign into.
A newsletter service is another separate decision. Read email hosting vs email marketing before expecting a hosting mailbox to handle subscriber campaigns.
HTTPS and security: check the actual scope
Hosting offers often use the phrase “SSL certificate.” Modern HTTPS uses TLS to protect communications between a browser and a service, as explained in Cloudflare’s HTTPS guide. This protects that connection; it does not fix a vulnerable plugin or prove that the website’s content is trustworthy.
A certificate need not always be an extra purchase. Let’s Encrypt provides certificates free of charge. What still needs checking is whether your plan configures and renews a suitable certificate for the domains you use. A free certificate and an included management service are related but different facts.
- Does the certificate cover the main domain and the hostnames you intend to use?
- Who handles issuance, renewal and an issuance failure?
- Who redirects HTTP visits to HTTPS and checks for mixed-content problems?
- What other protection is included, and what remediation remains your responsibility?
Do not buy a security add-on just because the checkout shows it. First establish what it does, what the base plan already provides and what problem on your site it is intended to solve.
Backups are useful only with a recovery plan
For a typical WordPress site, files and database data are both needed for a complete restoration. The WordPress backup handbook explains that distinction. Downloading the website folder alone does not usually capture the database.
Check frequency, retention, scope, download access and restoration rights. SiteGround’s Site Tools backup documentation, for example, distinguishes daily copies, plan-dependent manual backups and premium download features. It also warns that deleting a site removes access to its backups. These conditions were checked on 6 October 2026 and apply to that service.
Turn the feature list into a question you can answer: “If today’s update breaks the site, which copy can I restore, and who can perform the restore?” For an active site, also consider what content or transactions would be lost between the backup time and the failure.
Keep a recovery copy that will remain accessible if you leave the host. Before relying on any backup system, verify the procedure on a safe test environment. A provider’s backup claim is documentation evidence; a successful restoration is a different kind of evidence.
What does support cover?
Read support scope as carefully as support hours. Access to a support channel does not establish a resolution time or whether staff will repair a custom plugin. Write down whether the service covers the server, the control panel, WordPress configuration or application code.
For a critical function, ask what information you must provide during an incident and which actions you can perform without waiting for assistance. A support team that needs a reproducible error will be easier to work with if you know how to capture the affected URL and time without sending passwords.
Check the initial term and renewal
- Record the total due now. Identify the exact term covered. A monthly equivalent is not proof that billing is monthly.
- Separate mandatory and optional items. Include the services you actually need and remove unrelated checkout extras.
- Record renewal conditions. Check the hosting, domain and each add-on separately.
- Check tax and currency. Compare the same market and the amount relevant to your purchase.
- Read cancellation and refund rules. Do not assume a hosting refund also refunds registration or an add-on.
- Check the exit process. Confirm how you retrieve files, database data and mail before closing an account.
To compare a prepaid term, divide the relevant total by the months it covers. Keep that calculation alongside the total payment; the two numbers answer different questions. No prices are supplied here because the offer, market, term and checkout conditions must be verified for your purchase.
Start with what hosting does if you have not chosen a publishing system. For WordPress maintenance services, use shared vs managed WordPress hosting.
