THE SHORT ANSWER

Estimate the audience and all monthly sends, then select the smallest plan whose capacity and operating limits fit the newsletter.

MailerLite pricing is easiest to understand when you separate the audience from the sending calendar. A newsletter with a small list and several automated messages can have a different workload from one that sends a single monthly update. The current plans are Free, Comfort, Power and Enterprise. Compare the subscriber tier, email allowance and operational limits together, then choose the commitment that fits your actual newsletter.

This guide uses public references checked on 16 October 2026, including the pricing calculator’s 500-subscriber selection in USD. It is a buying framework with worked arithmetic, not a measured sending or conversion test. Older plan names and legacy Free allowances do not describe the current product. Confirm which account version you use before relying on an older tutorial or invoice.

Free is US$0 with up to 250 subscribers and 2,500 monthly emails. The paid prices above belong to the selected 500-subscriber tier, not every list size. Change the calculator to your required tier before comparing the payment. A displayed annual monthly equivalent is a way to compare a prepaid term; it does not mean the annual plan is invoiced each month.

Match the plan to the sending workload

The current billing documentation defines Comfort’s monthly email allowance as ten times the ceiling of the subscriber tier. The 500 tier therefore provides 5,000 monthly sends. Power lists unlimited monthly email sending subject to fair use. Enterprise has custom commercial arrangements. Keep the selected subscriber allowance and sending allowance visible together when comparing plans. Read the current billing rules before estimating a larger list.

The same billing page’s Automatic Upgrades section says paid plans upgrade automatically when either the active-subscriber limit or the monthly email-sending limit is exceeded. A monthly sending-limit upgrade returns to the subscriber-based tier at renewal. The page describes prorated upgrade billing; for annual plans, exceeding either limit triggers an automatic charge to the default payment method based on the new annual cost and the remaining term. Annual prepayment therefore does not make over-limit usage a fixed-cost commitment. Review this behaviour alongside the sending budget.

One email delivered to one subscriber counts as one send. To estimate your workload, multiply each planned campaign’s audience by the number of campaigns, then add the messages expected from automations and other sending activity. Use a deliberate reserve for a busier month. This is a planning calculation, not a prediction of subscriber growth or engagement.

A realistic newsletter budget

For an illustrative 400-person audience, four campaigns to everyone would use 1,600 sends. If fifty new subscribers each receive a two-email welcome sequence, that adds 100 sends. The simple planned total is 1,700 before any other activity. This example shows why the email calendar matters alongside the subscriber count; it is not an observed MailerLite account result.

Now change the schedule rather than the audience. Twelve full-list campaigns would account for 4,800 sends before the same welcome messages or other automations. That is a different operating position within a 5,000-send budget. Record the real expected activity and review it when frequency changes. A list can remain the same size while its sending requirement grows substantially.

Planning inputWhat to record
AudienceThe subscriber tier needed during the billing cycle
CampaignsExpected recipient count for each scheduled message
AutomationsLikely entrants and email steps per journey
Busy periodsLaunches, events or other justified frequency changes
ReserveDeliberate room for additional legitimate sending

Check how subscribers are counted

MailerLite describes a cumulative active-subscriber count during each billing cycle. An address active earlier in the cycle can still count even if deleted later. Its current rules also describe automatic tier increases for paid accounts when the subscriber limit is exceeded. Read the notification and billing behaviour for your account rather than expecting a last-minute deletion to change the existing cycle’s usage.

Use an audience you genuinely intend to email, with clear subscription status and a maintainable signup process. Removing records solely to chase a lower tier can make the operational picture harder to understand. Keep exclusions and historical choices in an appropriate controlled record. The list budget should reflect the newsletter you are actually running, including expected new signups before the next review.

Free is a useful small starting point

Free provides a defined environment for a small audience and a limited production workflow. The current plan includes two user seats and bounded form, automation and site capacity. Its usefulness depends on the whole journey you need to run: a signup route, confirmation where configured, a welcome message and regular campaigns. Check those parts together before deciding that subscriber count is the only upgrade trigger.

Use a representative first newsletter and welcome journey to evaluate the approach. Inspect the actual received message on a phone, follow its main link and confirm the intended subscriber state. A premium trial can expose features that are not retained on Free, so review what your chosen post-trial plan includes before making them essential to a live workflow.

Comfort provides a defined operating envelope

Comfort lists three user seats, up to 50 active automations, 10 active forms and 10 active websites and landing pages combined, alongside its tier-based send allowance. These are useful planning boundaries for a small operation. Compare them with the number of distinct journeys and signup locations you truly need rather than creating extra versions without a maintenance purpose.

A focused newsletter can benefit from a small number of well-maintained templates, groups and automation paths. Document what each one does and who owns it. If the workload fits Comfort, a clearer operating process can be more valuable than buying unused capacity. Review the limit again when a new product, audience or editorial schedule creates a real additional requirement.

Power is relevant when repeated sending or team needs grow

Power provides a different capacity comparison, with unlimited monthly emails subject to fair use and unlimited user seats, active automations, forms and sites under the current plan description. It also supports multiple automation triggers. Consider it when a specific sending schedule or operating need exceeds the smaller envelope, then confirm the applicable conditions in the account.

Unlimited capacity should support a purposeful newsletter, not replace audience judgment. Keep frequency consistent with the signup promise and make each automation useful. A higher plan does not guarantee inbox placement, engagement or revenue. Its value comes from removing a concrete capacity constraint while you maintain the content, audience and sender setup.

Choose the payment commitment deliberately

Monthly billing is a useful comparison while the audience and workflow are developing. Annual prepayment can suit a stable newsletter with a realistic calendar, but the full amount is committed upfront. Include quiet periods and the expected growth path in your decision. Use the correct currency selection and read the actual tax treatment rather than applying a conversion to a price from another market.

  • Set the subscriber tier deliberately before reading the paid price.
  • Count campaigns and automation emails together in the monthly send plan.
  • Check the active-cycle subscriber rules and tier-increase behaviour.
  • Confirm the forms, automations, sites and user seats the operation needs.
  • Distinguish post-trial features from those retained on the chosen plan.
  • Read the complete payment, next renewal and applicable conditions at checkout.

MailerLite offers a clear path from a small newsletter to a busier operation. Free supports a bounded start; Comfort provides a defined paid sending budget; Power is worth comparing when frequency or capacity becomes a real constraint. Choose from the audience and calendar you can explain, then revisit the plan when those requirements change.
