A hosting backup and an independent WordPress backup can solve different recovery problems. An included host copy may be enough for a routine rollback. A copy you control outside that account can be useful if you lose account access, move providers or discover a problem after the host's retention window ends.

A hosting backup and an independent WordPress backup can solve different recovery problems. An included host copy may be enough for a routine rollback. A copy you control outside that account can be useful if you lose account access, move providers or discover a problem after the host’s retention window ends.
UpdraftPlus is one way to arrange a WordPress backup. Its free version is a real option; a paid licence is justified by a feature or workflow you need. This comparison concerns documented capabilities, not a restore we have independently performed.
Start with the loss you can tolerate
Write down how much recent work you could lose and how long you could operate without the site. A weekly portfolio edit and a stream of customer orders need different recovery plans. A successful backup notification alone does not show that the copy contains the right data or that somebody can restore it.
An original scenario: an editor updates a pricing page on Monday, then finds on Friday that an earlier plugin change damaged the page. The useful copy needs to be both old enough to predate the damage and recent enough to contain acceptable content. That is a retention decision as well as a frequency decision.
What the two hosting examples document
SiteGround documents up to 30 daily copies on shared hosting, restoration of files/databases/email, and five manual backup slots on GrowBig and higher. Downloading its backup archives is a Premium Backup feature; a manual file/database export is another route. Its guide warns that deleting a site removes access to its backups. These details concern Site Tools, not the separate SiteGround Website Builder workflow.
Hostinger’s guide documents downloadable files and database copies, six weeks of weekly retention and seven days of daily retention. It says daily backups are available on Business or higher, while the current WordPress offer labels a plan Unlimited and lists daily backups. Confirm the entitlement for the exact SKU rather than assuming the names are interchangeable.
| Question | Host-managed copy | Separately configured WordPress backup |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls access? | Hosting account and the provider’s tools | Your WordPress installation and chosen storage credentials |
| How long is it kept? | Published plan retention and available snapshots | The retention you configure, subject to storage and successful jobs |
| Can you leave with it? | Check download/export entitlement before cancellation | Verify the stored archives and the restoration route on another installation |
| Does it include email and DNS? | Check the provider’s documented scope | Do not assume a WordPress backup covers separate mailbox or DNS services |
The rightmost column is a responsibility framework, not proof that every plugin offers the same scope. Separate storage also needs separate access management: a copy tied to an inaccessible email account is difficult to retrieve during an incident.
What UpdraftPlus Free and Premium add
The UpdraftPlus product documentation describes Free with manual and scheduled backups, remote storage and restoration. Premium adds features including automatic backups before updates, incremental file backups, multiple storage destinations, additional migration tools and support. These are vendor descriptions, not measured evidence that a restore will succeed on your site.
The official backup tutorial documents choosing the files/database to include, remote storage and retention, and restoring selected components or uploaded archives. This matters because selecting only part of a site can leave a supposedly complete recovery incomplete. Review the actual backup settings and storage job, not merely whether the plugin is installed.
A useful free starting point is an appropriately scheduled copy sent to storage you can reach independently, with enough space and a recorded recovery procedure. Consider Premium when its specific workflow solves a gap: checkpoints before updates, multiple destinations or a migration requirement. Do not pay solely because a website earns money; establish which capability your present process lacks.
Compare the complete recovery cost
The UpdraftPlus pricing page observed on 6 October 2026 displayed USD amounts explicitly including VAT for Spain. Those are not a verified US quote. A reader should request the price for their real billing country, site count and licence term, including renewal and any separately charged storage. We have not purchased a licence or confirmed a checkout total.
For a fair comparison, list the hosting tier or backup add-on cost, plugin licence, remote storage, and time needed to check jobs. Keep the initial invoice and recurring cost separate. An already included host service has no additional licence invoice, but its export limitations or retention may still affect your workflow.
A recovery rehearsal checklist
- Confirm the copy includes the required files, database and recent uploads.
- Check that it reached the intended destination and can be retrieved.
- Restore into an isolated test installation using a copy of the archive; protect customer data and prevent outgoing messages or orders.
- Verify important pages, administrator access and essential functions.
- Record the copy’s timestamp, missing data, restoration steps and time taken.
- Repeat when the site’s recovery requirements or configuration change.
This is a proposed procedure, not a record of a test performed for this article. Do not overwrite a live store as an experiment: restoring an old database can replace transactions recorded after the snapshot.
Choose the smallest complete process
If the included host backup, retention, export and a verified recovery procedure meet your needs, another paid product may add little. If the host account is your only route to every copy, an independent destination is worth evaluating. For frequent transactions, start with the permissible data loss and ask whether any available schedule meets it.
Continue with what a hosting plan includes and Hostinger vs SiteGround. No hosting restore, paid UpdraftPlus installation or support interaction was independently tested for this comparison.
Backup licenses by actual selected country
The official UpdraftPlus interface was checked with United States and USD on 16 October 2026. Confirm the tax treatment for your actual billing details. Future renewal is not quoted separately, so the table does not assume that today’s annual amount is a guaranteed renewal. Select licenses for actual sites and check storage rather than buying unused capacity.
Costs alongside this guide
Hosting and independent backup are different purchases. An included backup is not automatically an independently recoverable copy.
