THE SHORT ANSWER

A domain and hosting do different jobs. A domain is a name you register, such as example.com. Web hosting is the service that stores or runs your website and delivers it to visitors. A public website needs a hosting arrangement, but it does not always need a separately purchased domain or a separately purchased hosting product.

A simple address nameplate on a signpost points across a route to a miniature website building housed on a server foundation; name versus place.

A domain and hosting do different jobs. A domain is a name you register, such as example.com. Web hosting is the service that stores or runs your website and delivers it to visitors. A public website needs a hosting arrangement, but it does not always need a separately purchased domain or a separately purchased hosting product.

If you want a website at your own domain, you generally need control of that domain and a service that accepts it. Those two requirements can be supplied by one company, separate companies or a hosted platform’s bundle.

A name is different from the website service

A domain is useful because a name is easier to work with than a network address. MDN explains how a domain lookup helps a browser find a server. The browser still needs the server to deliver the page afterwards.

Registering the name does not create pages, install WordPress or write your content. ICANN describes the registration relationship between a registrant and a registrar. The registration gives you rights to use the name under the applicable agreement; it is not a purchase of a complete website.

Hosting supplies the service behind the website. Google Cloud’s introduction explains the storage and content-delivery role. A host can be running a site without your preferred domain being connected to it yet.

DNS connects services; it does not store your article

DNS is a system of records associated with names. A and AAAA records connect names to IP addresses, while CNAME records refer to another name. MX records concern mail delivery. See Cloudflare’s record-type reference for the technical distinctions.

This lets different services coexist under one domain. The website may be served by one provider while email goes to another. The DNS configuration describes where those services are found; it does not contain the portfolio text, the blog database or your mailbox messages.

It is also why a website move is not necessarily a domain transfer. You can change the service used for the website without changing the registrar. Likewise, moving the registrar does not automatically move the website files.

Which parts do you actually need?

Your intentionWhat to investigateWhat may be unnecessary
Publish at a platform-provided addressThe platform’s website service and address conditionsA separately registered custom domain
Publish WordPress at your custom domainDomain registration, DNS and compatible WordPress hostingA second hosting account if one already meets the requirements
Use a hosted builder at your custom domainThe builder plan, domain connection and registration renewalA generic hosting plan unrelated to that builder
Use only custom-domain emailDomain registration, DNS and an email serviceWebsite hosting if you are not publishing a website
Draft a site locallyA local development environmentPublic hosting or a domain before you decide to launch
Match the service to the intended use

The email-only scenario is covered in business email without a website. A domain can support purposes other than a public website, so buy for the task you actually have.

A hosted platform may already supply hosting

A hosted builder is not simply an editor that always needs another server purchase. Wix states that hosting is built into its website offering. Its domain documentation distinguishes a free Wix address from connecting a custom domain, which requires a site plan.

Check the exact platform’s documentation before assuming the same conditions apply everywhere. “Hosting included” also does not settle whether email, a custom domain or every function you need is included.

For example, a fictional volunteer club might begin with a platform-provided address while preparing its information pages. Later it may want a memorable club domain. That change can introduce a registration cost and a platform-plan requirement, but it does not necessarily introduce a separate generic web-hosting purchase.

Buying together or separately

Buying from one company can reduce the number of accounts and may simplify setup. Keeping the domain separate can make the registrar account easier to retain while you change website providers. These are operational trade-offs, not proof that either arrangement will be cheaper or more reliable.

As a concrete product example, Wix allows an externally registered domain to be connected. In that arrangement, registration and renewal remain with the registrar. Transferring the domain is a different option and changes where those items are managed.

Whichever arrangement you choose, confirm that the domain is registered to the intended person or organization and that the owner has access to the account. A developer may help manage a website, but that should not leave the owner unable to renew or control its public name.

Keep renewals and troubleshooting separate

The domain and website service can have different renewal dates. ICANN’s renewal guidance explains the need to renew registration to continue using a domain and its associated services. Keep contact and payment information current rather than relying on a website-hosting payment to renew everything.

When the site is unreachable, check the actual symptom. A misspelled URL, expired registration, incorrect DNS connection and unavailable website service call for different checks. Avoid buying another plan before identifying which part is failing.

Before you purchase

  1. Choose your publishing system and check whether it already hosts the site.
  2. Decide whether a platform address is sufficient or you need your own domain.
  3. Record where registration, DNS, the website and email will be managed.
  4. Check the required plan for connecting your custom domain.
  5. Confirm who controls each account and renewal.
  6. Check the full initial and renewal costs without treating a temporary inclusion as permanent.

If you choose separate providers, read the practical connection checklist before changing DNS. If you have yet to choose a site service, start with what hosting does.
