Wix is a documented example of a hosted offering: its website hosting page says hosting is built into its website creation service. WordPress.com also includes hosting. Identify the product before buying hosting
Ask one direct question: When I use this product to publish the site, which service will operate the live website? A hosted platform should be able to answer it in its plan or support documentation. If you are downloading software, installing an editor inside an existing WordPress site or exporting files, you still need to determine where the resulting site runs.
For example, downloading WordPress is not the same transaction as signing up for WordPress.com. A host might supply a WordPress installation and a builder together, but the host’s plan is the operating service in that case. Read website builder vs WordPress for the wider decision.
Do not purchase a separate plan simply because a tutorial uses the word hosting. Match the tutorial to your actual product and check whether that part of the setup is already supplied.
What included hosting means
Included hosting means the service operates the website as part of its offering. It does not mean every related website expense disappears, or that every plan includes the same resources, features or support.
Treat the bundle as several questions rather than one:

A custom domain can still require an upgrade

A first-year domain promotion also needs a separate renewal question. Wix’s hosting page mentions a first-year offer on selected plans, which should not be read as permanent free registration. Ask about email separately
A website plan, a mailbox and an email marketing account solve different problems. At Wix, Google Workspace business email is purchased separately from Premium and Studio site plans. That specific condition is documented; do not assume another provider follows it. Wix business email setup and purchasing.
Wix also documents keeping an external mailbox provider and configuring the required records. The mailbox’s ownership and billing stay with that email provider. External email with Wix.
For a candidate plan, write down the number of actual mailboxes included, what you can send and receive, and who bills for renewal. A fictional example: avoiding a duplicate subscription
Alex is a fictional photographer evaluating a hosted builder for a portfolio. Alex wants a custom address and one mailbox, and already controls a domain at a registrar.
A useful shopping list is therefore the eligible builder plan, the existing domain’s renewal and a suitable mailbox arrangement. A generic hosting plan is only added if a specific requirement needs a separate site or application elsewhere. The fact that the registrar sells hosting next to the domain does not make it necessary for this portfolio.
Before changing any DNS settings, Alex should record the existing website and email configuration and follow the chosen services’ official instructions. A new website connection should not accidentally remove the records supporting existing email.
Before you buy: six checks
- Record the exact product name and editor, rather than just the provider’s brand.
- Confirm in official documentation that the selected offering hosts the site.
- Check custom-domain eligibility and whether registration is separate.
- Identify actual mailbox requirements and the service that will meet them.
- Compare the full initial payment and renewals for the complete arrangement.
- Read export, cancellation and recovery conditions before a long commitment.
A free hosted option can be enough to try an idea or practise editing if its conditions suit you. A paid plan is worth considering when it supplies something you actually require, such as a particular domain or business workflow. Buying extra web hosting without a use for it does not improve the decision.
